Trainee Civil Engineer Review

Role was a mix of office and onsite work. This included: RAMS documents, AP documents and other enabling documentation, helping with CAD and taking surveying data into CAD. Onsite work includes: Marking out using surveying equipment (TS and GPS etc.), setting out for works, surveying the site (obtaining levels etc.), survey equipment checks.

During my first few weeks I was not given too much responsibility to allow me to settle in i.e. I began by making changes to documents where people had identified a problem and shadowing people onsite. This allowed to understand the job and the specific project. After the first few week to month I gained more responsibility and was able in the end to write RAMS, set out actual works and assist works.

I've learnt how to create practical accurate, and detailed surveying data to enable works to continue smoothly for high quality construction. I've had the opportunity to join various courses to add to my skill and knowledge base such as the Asbestos Awareness course and the Scaffold Awareness course. I've greatly developed my skills with writing RAMS documents to assist in the safe and accurate execution of work.

I was given a lot of support throughout my placement from all the members of the team making sure I understood the tasks I was given and how to do it when I got stuck.

The company culture was great, everyone was friendly, helpful, understanding, and accommodating and willing to help me progress in my career as well as help the team and the project.

This placement has been a fantastic learning curve for me and has been the biggest step in my career so far. I've enjoyed this placement from start to finish and the knowledge it has given me.
