Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The programme was an amazing chance to gain further information and experience on what it is like not only to be a commercial lawyer, but also be a member of CMS as a firm.
The daily tasks differed.
During the first week, we were given training days in order to help equip us with the skills required to become a corporate lawyer.
During the second week, I was part of the Competition team. I was given various research tasks and given the opportunity to sit in on client meetings.

What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was extremely rewarding.
All of the participants were allowed to sit in on a “town hall” meeting with people from all levels and departments of CMS.
This was the biggest eye opener to me in the sense of understanding the extent of the work CMS carries out.
Additionally, it was great to be able to see the practical impact of the work the various roles play.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
During the experience, I was able to develop a multitude of skills.
One of the most evident being my ability to carry out research. Being given research and subsequent support from my trainee while carrying it out was a massive help.
Additionally, we were given new processes to allow us to stay commercially aware. This was extremely helpful and I have continued to employ them almost daily.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture present at CMS was one of the biggest takeaways from the whole experience.
The positive and friendly atmosphere at CMS is amazing. Every person I interacted with had a genuine sense of wanting to help in any way they could, at no point did I feel like I was a burden or a nuisance.
It was refreshing and massively beneficial for my personal experience while at CMS that this firm culture is present.

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
Every aspect of the insight programme was not only educational but also extremely enjoyable.
Every person I interacted with at CMS contributed to this in their own way. From my fellow programme participants to my trainee and the early talent team.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CMS
The main advice I would give is to just be your genuine self (and be nice).
Also, I would tell them to make sure they’re prepared. Whether that be for different interview questions, psychometric tests or commercial awareness.
