Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
Gained insight into Global Banking & Markets business area in HSBC. We had an introduction day where we heard from various graduates for career advice, and also received Wall Street Prep technical skills sessions. The next two days focused on the Banking and Markets divisions respectively, where we played trading games and did relevant case studies. The final day involved shadowing, a tour of the building and advice for the next steps of the application process.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was a very beneficial experience, as I was unsure which area I wanted to choose for my future. Hearing from employees of varying seniority, definitely aided my decision making process, as I could see whether I was a good fit for the role based on their perspectives of it. It gave me an introduction to areas of the business that I had not even heard of before, and I have now considered them also.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
Developed skills in communication and professionalism through the Wall Street Prep sessions on the first day. Furthermore, I was able to gain an introduction into financial markets, so I gained knowledge about high-level technical insights into the industry. Furthermore, during the DCM Case Study, I learned how to analyse the suitability of bonds. Also, I learned about how to value a company, and analyse why a merger/acquisition would take place due to synergies.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company's culture seemed to be very welcoming and inclusive. It came across to me that it did not matter the background of a candidate, all they cared about was their curiosity, and willingness and ability to learn new things. Even the group of candidates was very diverse, coming from all over the world with different experience levels and interests. Furthermore, based on what the graduates said, it was a place where they encouraged collaboration and asking questions, as someone will always be available to help.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed the insight as I was able to meet new people who were similar to me, but also meet people who were very different to me. I was able to build my network vastly, and I enjoyed testing my technical knowledge in the case studies and having to think quick on my feet in the trading games. It was a very well structured and organised week, and they managed to fit a lot in a 4-day span.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to HSBC
In the application process, it is best to just be yourself. It is important to HSBC to see that you are able to be worked with and will be a good fit in their teams. So in the application process, show your personality in the best and most professional way that you can. Furthermore, it is important in video assessments, to make eye contact with the camera, smile sometimes and speak at a good pace.
