Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
Fantastic experience. Highly recommend. You complete a daily task for the team of one of the practice areas, to get exposure to types of work that IM do. Through the day you attend a series of meeting with IM staff of all levels to learn about their cases, work experiences, departments and the IM culture
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
On the last day, they provided a description of the process after the vacation scheme to let us know the approximate proportion of outstanding training contract roles available (you sit an exam for the training contract on the last day). I think they were transparent about the ongoing process as much as they could be (as clearly don’t know how many roles will be filled by internal candidates, as well as direct TC applicants)

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
Networking skills were brushed up with opportunity to meet so many people. Great opportunity to practice time management and organisational skills when balancing completing tasks to high standards and attending meeting. Communication and team work - as you work collaboratively with both students on placement and IM staff. Also learn some legal research and drafting skills

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Fantastic. Warm, welcoming, intelligent, down to earth, positive, passionate and organised. Staff were enthusiastic, energetic and available to students, which I found impressive for the length of the placement. Was lovely to see staff appearing to have reasonable work life balance

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Irwin Mitchell
Honestly be yourself. They really want to know who you are and why you want to be there. There is not a ‘mould’ of who they are looking for, so there is not a wrong answer. They value people that are passionate - for the law, their clients and the company. So show why you want to be there. Don’t be nervous - they are genuinely lovely people that are down to earth. Soak up everything that they say and keep a notebook - you will learn a great deal on the placement
