Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I've worked in the actuarial private team, helping on 2 client teams to do calculations and prepare meeting documents regarding their pension scheme. There has also been technical work given to me, which involves updating spreadsheets and other internal software for changes in investments, members of the pension scheme, or other assumptions.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes - I worked my way up from doing smaller tasks and calculations, to larger projects including preparing important documents for meetings.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Developed Excel skills, working with larger data sources. Required lots of professional communication, as I had to talk to people all over the company with ranging levels of seniority. Had to quickly learn theoretical background to DB pension schemes, though this is taught well.

There was lots of constant support given, from buddies and people manager, but also everyone with whom you were working with was very friendly and you could get help from any of these people.

Very friendly, you can speak to anyone and they would all always be willing to help. Lots of socials too, and a good work life balance.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Very enjoyable, a really friendly atmosphere and good culture to get an introduction to work in actuary. Well taught and lots of guidance given initially.

What advice would you give to others applying to Hymans Robertson
Soft skills are very important in the interview process, as no one knows much about pensions/actuary before joining. Do a bit of research however though to show you're keen on the kind of work that gets done.
