Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
The role was 4/5 days of the week doing client work - this could involve checking figures, filling out forms or checking documents. 0.5/5 days of the week you complete a project with other interns across the business, which you then present in the london office at the end. 0.5/5 days of the week you can complete training and development. The internship is a lot on teams as client teams are based around the UK
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given quite a lot of responsibility in my internship. It was mainly during the back end of the internship when I was more familiar with some of the processes and technically better. I was put on a client team in one of Aon's biggest growth areas, OCIO, which was really interesting. I was given tasks which included setting up the investment manager portals, checking bank details and filling out forms to be signed by an authorised signatory.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
It was a new experience for me working a corporate job so I learned how to be more disciplined with time management compared to university. I also learned lots about the different asset classes and why trustees might want to invest in each type. I also learned lots about different types of pensions, DB and DC. Finally I learned a lot about how different people manage and act around different clients - reacting to their needs.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I felt really well supported during the internship. I was given a buddy alongside my manager who was always willing to help with questions, from technical ones to simple practical ones on how to use a particular system. I had a weekly half an hour meeting with my manager, where I was able to bring up any concerns and talk about my goals for the internship. I then had a meeting to round off the internship where I received more detailed feedback.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture was very inclusive and supportive. Everyone was more than willing to help with any questions I had, and were really welcoming. I became friends with a few of the team and enjoy coming into the office to work with everyone. The hybrid nature of working is really good as it gives flexibility to work from home when you have other responsibilities. I also think that working with people from around the UK/world gives a sense of purpose.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed the internship. As I said in previous answers, the culture and people were what made the internship as good as it was. The team were all lovely and made me feel welcome from my first day, when there was a welcome lunch organised for me. I did enjoy the work, however it was mostly admin work as I am not qualified or knowledgeable enough to be doing more advisory consulting work yet.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Aon to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Aon
I would say that Aon is a great company which has some great opportunities to be taken advantage of. There is so much going on in the company, from re-insurance to risk to pensions. However, I would say that they should be careful in which jobs they are applying for. Even though I really enjoyed my internship, I thought that it would be more investment consulting, but it is really pensions consulting as much as it is investment.
