Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Completing a wide range of actuarial tasks. This could range from an individual member calculation to factor reviews. There are also client focused tasks, such as drafting valuation reports, and specialist team work. Each day varies depending on what work is needed for the clients. Most work will require the use of Excel to perform the calculations and then creating a clear audit trail after. There is a lot of interaction between other colleagues, whether for work briefing or asking for help and advice.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
You are given a fair amount of responsibility. Most tasks would be for the clients. I was involved in both doing (and on rare cases) checking the client work. The work you will often be assigned is the same as the work given to graduates and consultants and you are given the responsibility to uphold the same standards of work as other colleagues.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I feel I've developed a lot of skills over the internship. My proficiency in excel has developed a lot as well as my verbal and written communication. I have also learnt a lot of new technical skills related to the actuarial work I was doing.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Every intern is assigned a connector and a line manager. The connector is one of the first people to go to for help and assistance, and I had weekly meetings to check what I had been up to and if there is anything they could do to help if needed. Every colleague in the office is always happy to take questions when they are available and help with queries you may have.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
There was a very kind and friendly atmosphere at the office I worked at. Everybody was happy to take questions and frequently did events outside of work, whether that would be a small lunch at a restaurant or an evening social to go bowling. Aon also allows for hybrid working and flexible working hours, meaning you aren't restricted to a 'fixed' 9 to 5 workday and can vary along the week as long as you meet the contracted hours each week.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I've thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Aon. It has provided me with unvaluable experience and knowledge that has only furthered my enthusiasm for the role. I've have completed a wide range of tasks and have developed a lot of pre-existing skills, as well as new technical skills. The group project required for all interns allowed me to form connections with other interns situated in various different offices across the UK.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Aon to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Aon
Put time into researching the career path you would like to go into and try and understand what it involves. Aon has lots of resources on it's website to find out more information on the actuarial career, such as the research into the possibility of CDC pension schemes in the UK and what the impact of this could be. Make sure to apply as early as possible so you can put enough time into the application process before university work starts to increase.
