Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
It was a week long scheme with each day spent performing a task for a specific legal team. The schedule was pretty packed and included talks from all areas of the business as well as lunches and coffee chats with people from within the office.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was great to understand more about the business and everything that happens within a law firm that you are unaware of. However, most of that learning took place on Microsoft teams - not much happened in the actual office I was in which was a bit of a disappointment.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
Definitely developed a great understanding of the teams within Irwin Mitchell and learnt a lot of new law or legal application. I wouldn’t say that the placement developed any particular skillset however.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Atmosphere was mixed - the office was really empty on some days which felt pretty sad. On the last day of my placement I was the last one to leave the office as I had to stay until 5:30 and I was the only person on the scheme in that office. That felt very awkward. I got a good impression of the culture.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I enjoyed it and I learnt a lot but I would say that it was pretty lonely being the only person on the scheme and also that I never was made to particularly feel at ease over the course of the week.

I would suggest that the most important thing is knowing as much as you possibly can about the firm throughout every step of the process. I felt like the answers that they wanted to hear were the obvious ones - just well formulated and well informed.
