Summer Placement - Building Services Mechanical Review

I would shadow my buddy, attend meetings, 3D model buildings and run energy simulations. I would also fill out excel sheets and create powerpoint slides for presentations. I used a lot of CAD and other softwares to design the buildings and create their facade or the pipework layout.

Yes, one of the projects I was involved in, I was the main modeller for the building. I would ask for help when needed and my work was used in a meeting with architects to present my findings. This was a nice feeling as it shows I was trusted very early on and that the safety net of being shadowed was reliable.

I have developed my current CAD skills a lot and learnt how to use new softwares such as IES and Revit. I have also developed my excel skills by learning some tips and tricks from current employees. I also developed my public speaking skills by having the chance to present my work at meetings. This has also allowed me to develop the way I present my findings

Lots of support and guidance. Everyone is really friendly and helpful and gives you their time when they can and whenever you ask. Even if the person isn’t your designated buddy they will still put in effort and they go above and beyond for you. They’re completely understanding of your current skill set and give you tips that they’ve learnt themselves.

Everyone is very helpful and friendly. The environment at work especially in office is a strong factor as to why many people stay at Arup for a very long time. Work is flexible and you have the option to work from home. However the office is very nice and perfectly tailored for the work we do. There is hot desking and they have their own cafe which is very convenient. Everyone is professional and friendly and understanding , I felt there was no micromanagement and it allowed for productivity to increase for everyone. Everyone’s values and opinion is respected. It makes work not feel like a chore.

I enjoyed my internship so much. Everyday was a day for me to learn and experience something new or overcome a new challenge. Being able to work on different aspects of different projects really widened my horizon of what an engineer does. The social aspect and the friendliness of the employees also helps with wanting to work here further. The work is sustainability driven and heavily ethical which is also nice as it feels quite meaningful
