Trainee Engineer Review

I undertook and delivered the design and assessments of temporary works structures and geotechnical analysis in accordance with engineerings standards and codes for a range of BAM Nuttall civil engineering projects across the country. This included delivering detailed design reports, detailed drawings, and design risk assessments.

I was given lots of responsibility throughout my placement, but also had access to support from senior engineers when needed. I was able to dictate how to take on the design tasks I was assigned and felt that I played an important role in the projects.

I have developed a greater understanding of engineering theory in structural and geotechnical design and analysis, including knowledge of the various Eurocodes and British Standards. I have also developed further proficiency in using engineering software, such as Revit, Civil3D, Robot and other engineering software.

I was given lots of responsibility and able to dictate how I could undertake the design tasks, whilst being reassured with support from senior engineers and never felt that I was alone on the tasks. Senior engineers were extremely helpful in making sure I understood everything.

Everyone both within the department and the wider company were very welcoming and provided great support. The company was great at highlighting the importance of inclusivity and diversity in the industry.

I have really enjoyed spending my time with BAM Nuttall. The experience I have been provided with has been hugely beneficial for my university studies and future career in the industry. Not only have I furthered my knowledge of engineering theory, but I have also made valuable connections and developed a greater understanding of the industry and the direction it will be heading towards in the future.
