Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
I spent two weeks in one department and then one week in another. There was also a group presentation task which was completed during the second week. Day to day tasks involved reviewing documents, drafting documents, research tasks, sitting in on meetings with clients, taking attendance notes/ minutes of meetings and attending various training sessions both in person and virtually
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
At first it was overwhelming because there are so many opportunities in DLA Piper but once you speak to people it becomes exciting. Seeing how an international firm operates is exciting as you can see how fluidly offices work together and the clients you will be interacting with. Speaking to people who have grown in the firm is exciting as you feel as though you can grow in DLA Piper

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I’ve gained a lot of experience in drafting legal documents. Reviewing documents has also aided in learning how legal documents should be drafted, the format they use and the language used. The group project forced me to improve my time management skills as I had to balance completing day to day tasks and also ensuring I was completing my part of the project.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
4/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture of DLA Piper is amazing and a big talking point of the internship. The atmosphere in the office is incredibly friendly, you can talk to absolutely anyone and they’re happy to chat or offer advice when needed. The work culture is very healthy compared to some law firms and there’s a flexibility around working hours which allows people to prioritise what is important to them while getting their work done

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. Starting the internship with a trip to London instantly showed the international side of the firm and how closely the offices work together. Being allowed to attend client meetings and aiding with current deals showed me real life first hand experience as to what a job in a law firm entails. It was amazing to see how the law is applied in real life compared to what you learn in college.

Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper
I would recommend to everyone to apply to DLA Piper. The firm is so welcoming and in new office like Dublin there is a culture of collaboration and striving to grow the office which is exciting. My advice would be to prepare to be busy and to be able to prioritize and time manage. When applying to DLA Piper be sure you know the culture or the firm and their values and they truly are at the heart of the firm and they impact day to day life more than you’d think
