Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
I had a lot of varied tasks from research to drafting documents for court. Everything was exciting. Nothing was repetitive. I felt like all the tasks I did were important. Therefore, I felt that, despite my junior position, I was really helping the team out; the internship has been a very satisfying experience.
Furthermore, there were lots of social events to get involved in throughout the internship. Therefore, a significant part of the day-to-day was having fun playing darts, golf and rounders.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
I have had many conversations with partners and other more senior people in the firm. They were all super transparent and inspirational when it came to outlining how to progress in DLA. Furthermore, on day one, all the interns were given a detailed breakdown of the firm's business. This was not only incredibly insightful and interesting, but it made me feel like I was part of the company and that I could contribute to the firm's business.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I have learned and developed a lot of skills throughout the internship. I have learned how to arrange meetings with partners and talk with them in the firm - which may seem like a daunting, but important, skill to learn. I have developed my ability to manage my time effectively and to communicate professionally when I reach capacity. I have learned how to draft and file documents for court. Furthermore, I have learned from the best on how to present cases in court. There are too many skills, that I have developed and learned, to mention them all.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Everyone in the firm was really kind and happy to talk with me. The partners were really kind and were not intimidating; the office is open planned. Hence, there are no offices. Everyone works on the same floor in cubicles. I think that says a lot about the culture of the firm. People of all seniority levels were happy to have coffee chats with me to answer any questions that I had. Everyone was really lovely and kind. That really makes a difference.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I thoroughly enjoyed it. This does not mean that it was easy. There was a lot of work to be done - I'm glad this was the case. I have waited a year to work here - I am so glad that I got the full experience. Everything is brilliant - from the computers, the people, the training, the food and the quality of work. You really do feel that you are working with the best of the best.

Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper
I would say if you are kind and down to earth person - be yourself. That goes a long way. You will definitely meet other interns, especially when you go down to London, that appear to be super confident. That may look good. However, do not be put off by that. I have found that being down to earth, kind and genuine has allowed me to really get on with the people that actually work in the firm. Please do not let the loudest voices in the room to allow you to doubt yourself - you are good enough. Let the positive and best version of yourself shine through. Be yourself, be punctual, be down-to-earth, work hard and it should be recognised.
