Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
Most of my time was spent in meetings with other RMS employees who shared their career paths and taught me a lot about the technical aspects of actuarial work as well. I also was welcomed into team meetings, which felt very valuable as I was able to get a feel for how the team functioned cohesively and a realistic perspective of the job. I spent my free time exploring a piece of new AI based technology that a senior staff member is considering implementing.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
I was thrilled to learn as much about the business as I did. Primarily, I learned about the differences between banking, life, and non-life, which had been a sort of black box to me prior. Additionally, I enjoyed seeing my mentor’s actual daily work, as the profession had thus far in my life been very conceptual (‘estimate risk’) and this made it more tangible. I also really enjoyed learning about PWC’s particular role in the industry, as their values and culture definitely align with what I want to experience.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I’ve learnt many new skills, but the one that stands out is curiosity and following up on interesting interactions. For example, I learned a lot from some mentors about the actuarial regulations, which I then continued researching on my own as well as asking further questions. Everyone was willing to indulge my curiosity and I learned a lot about future regulatory changes. Now, I follow the news to keep up to date with what may happen!

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture was really supportive and engaging. Nobody was really locked away, and it was impossible to tell at a glance who was the most senior staff, because everyone collaborated and sat together. I could tell each team member had a ton of respect for each other. When I spoke to my mentors to learn more about the people I was meeting, they spoke highly and directed me to ask about that person’s particular skill set. I felt very welcomed and I was relieved to see the support and community.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed the insight! Not only did I learn so much about what an actuary does and what the career entails, but I particularly enjoyed learning about PWC’s specific approach to the field. I felt very welcomed and valued by the team, and I also loved getting all the technical information and wrapping my brain around it. The work was unlike anything I’d done before, and I really loved that challenge. I appreciated learning about how and why everyone ended up at PWC, and I am so glad I got to meet everyone and take part in the insight.

Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to PwC
I would recommend that others dig through their website to get a sense of their values and mission statement. It is clear that the company genuinely cares about them and implements programs to reach their goals. I would also suggest that others ask a lot of questions! Everybody was happy to answer them, and it was definitely the best way that I got a sense of the job and learned so much about the regulations and technical aspects.
