Mechanical Design Placement Student Review

On a day-to-day basis I am working on multiple tasks, varying widely from actual part and fixture design to physical testing and technical reports. I attend and contribute in meetings, including presenting recent work and working through issues. I talk to external suppliers regarding feasibility and cost optimization of components, to produce a positive outcome for all parties.

I was initially given a nice medium of responsibility, feeling I was contributing and helping the team without being overly pressured. But when I asked, I was always able to pick up more work if I had the capacity to. But, equally importantly, I was always allowed to say no to a task if I didn't have the time to do it. I thought the workload was managed brilliantly.

Technically, my CAD & IT skills, report writing, engineering drawing and general design knowhow have all drastically improved throughout my year at Cummins. In regards to softer skills, my organization, communication and presentation skills have come along way.

My line manager had placements students previously, and was very aware of my University's requirements for the placement. The HR department were great at supporting the placement students, very approachable and helpful.

The culture of the company was very easy to fit into, everyone is very friendly and approachable. The atmosphere is relaxed and jovial, despite the fast pace of the work.

I really enjoyed my placement, I've made friends and gained a lot of information about the working world as an engineer. My technical skills have obviously improved, but a big takeaway I didn't expect is that I now have reference for what sort of engineering work I want to look for in the future.
