Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Finance placement student. Work is centered around aiding the team in month end activities, for site both in the UK and Europe. This involves preparing month end journals for both transportation and warehousing, evaluating profit/loss statements and balance sheet reconciliations. Another element is the reporting of the financial results for sites across the UK which then get distributed to different team leaders/managers to be used for forecasting. Also do as-hoc accounting admin work including supplier set ups and quick-pay requests.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, in the finance team you will be given a list of monthly tasks that are solely for yourself to complete every month. You are treated as a regular employee as opposed to just a placement student.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Due to the nature of the role, my IT skills have increased since starting placement as you start using different software more regularly and learn how to best approach a new task. I have learned how to communicate effectively towards not only my own team but to different groups of people and adapt to the etiquette of writing based on who I'm communicating with.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
The finance placement was a great introduction to what working in an industry is like and offered a fantastic experience to put the knowledge learned at university into practice. As the company is a large global organisation, there are so many different elements to the job that you can also get a good understanding of different sectors such as logistics, operations and how they link together.
