Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
It was a really valuable experience in which first year law students interacted with and received talks from a range of different employees, to give a better insight of the values and day to day workings of the firm. The experience provided ample opportunity to network with both peers and members of the firm.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
We learnt a lot about the workings of the firm as a multi-national and "one - UK" firm, so how the international nature of DLA Piper impacts the day to day work of employees. I found that this insight helped me better understand how they are able to get work done so efficiently across such a wide geographical span.
Further the penultimate session provided key insight into applications for the potential roles as trainees which was certainly the most useful application session I have attended so far. They explained really clearly what they want to hear from us, what the role consisted of, and the possible paths forward.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
A key skill that I developed during this insight scheme was networking. It can be really daunting to first interact with members of such a prestigious firm, and through the mix of formal and informal networking opportunities, such as a networking lunch, I was able to build up confidence and get some really useful connections.
Other than this, it was more about understanding your personal strengths and how best to highlight them in an application or interview - something I am now confident I can do

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Unsurprisingly, the firm was a professional environment, clear from the meetings we could see through the windows. However, it was a very welcoming, engaging environment. I found that I was put at ease with my nerves and instead just prepared to take in all the information and do some work. The company's culture came off with such good vibes, especially from hearing all about the specialist events they have run, and is definitely the type of place I'd like to work. It is clear from both the atmosphere and in speaking to members of the firm that there is a focus on wellbeing and work-life balance, something not particularly seen in large international firms.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed it. Not only did I leave and reflect on how much I'd learnt and the possible opportunities from the insight scheme, but on how much fun I had had. They gave us ample opportunity to socialise with one another, through both the social and the breaks during sessions. I found that I made connections through the activities and that made the whole process even more enjoyable. The combination of both professional and personal development the insight offered is incomparable.

Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper
Go to their sessions such as these, the insight scheme provided me with perfect application tips that I can't condense into a few sentences. They have a personality unlike other law firms, so I'd suggest showing that you do too.
