Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Writing requirements, test specifications, and operating sub-systems. I would usually work on a particular document or sub-system for weeks/months and these tasks would change depending on the state of the project.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, I was given responsibilities such as constructing official documents as well as meeting international vendors, and having to form professional relationships.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, I learned about IP networks and configured a dynamic network myself. I also learnt a lot about radios, modems, antennas and HF communications as a whole

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was given satisfactory support during my placement. My supervisor was very helpful and would always answer questions if I was stuck however, my line manager had minimal to no communication with me for 9 out of the 12 months I was there and as a result, I went into the placement and started with insufficient knowledge to make an impact to the project or the company.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture was positive and there was a good balance between work and play. The general atmosphere was not as lively as I expected and there seemed to be a lot of employees who were not as enthusiastic as I would've thought.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at Leonardo as I learned a lot of technical and non-technical skills as well as developed a better understanding of how defense companies function and the importance of forming professional relationships. I also learned what I do not want to do in my future career.

What advice would you give to others applying to Leonardo
Make an effort to socialise with colleagues and if you are not happy with the project you are allocated make it known so that you can switch to one that better suits you and your academic background. Take initiative when trying to climb the engineering ranks.
