Homeware Design Industrial Placement Review

Creating, amending and recolouring print and pattern, and applying this to Homeware product briefs. Assisting with trend forecasting research and developing trend packs and colour palettes with the homeware design team. Providing sample checking feedback for suppliers and checking colours again pantone palettes. Compiling competitor benchmarking reports, sustainability reports, and industry wide research. Researching and writing a monthly internal homeware design magazine. Working alongside trainee assistant buyers to develop small ranges with with suppliers.

I was very surprised with the amount of responsibility I was trusted with while on my placement, but was very pleased that this was given in a supported and healthy way. Because of the help I was given along the way I never felt overwhelmed. By the end of my placement I was very grateful for the number of independent projects I was given, as I felt these greatly helped my personal and professional development.

I have greatly developed my adobe photoshop and illustrator skills, as well learning industry level specifications for design. It has also been extremely valuable to learn how to effectively apply this print to product CADs and brief sheets, and how to communicate certain techniques to suppliers.

I received weekly 1:1's with my line manager to discuss my workload and any support I felt I needed. My support however never felt restricted to this weekly meeting, as I was able to email, message or ask a question in person at any time. Both my line manager, and the rest of the Homeware design team were happy to help at any time.

Matalan felt like a friendly place to work, with lots going on in head office to make us feel valued. I never had a bad experience with anyone.

My placement with Matalan exceeded my already high expectations. I am very grateful for all the opportunities I was given, as I feel they have helped me develop both personally and professionally.
