Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The insight programme was incredible and was organised very well. The first day was in-person in their London office. There was a breakfast to begin with where we got to meet others on the programme and after that, we entered a conference hall where we then heard from the keynote speaker, who was so inspirational. The day then consisted of panel discussions, a networking lunch that had stands from different business units within NatWest Group, and workshops that focused on mindset and personal discovery. The second day was virtual and consisted of working on a group project for a charity which we also got to present! Then, we got to hear from previous interns and attend virtual coffee chats.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was really great. We were given various opportunities to learn about all the roles available on both days. Lunch on the first day involved stands with different business units e.g. markets, wealth management, financing solutions etc. which meant you can go up and ask questions to further your understanding, especially when making a choice about where you might apply for their internships next year. Then, on the second day, we got to hear from previous interns as well as have virtual coffee chats which were in smaller breakout rooms for around 20 minutes per business unit, which was a really great format to freely ask anything!

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
Working on the team challenge really helped with developing skills such as teamwork, communication and time management. We only had around an hour to work in our groups so it definitely helped with learning how to be as efficient as possible when working with new people in such a short time frame. As well this, we were given many opportunities to network with business representatives across various units which really helped with communication again and learning what skills they are looking for.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The atmosphere when walking into the conference hall and during the first day as a whole felt really relaxed and a place where you can bring your full self to work. This was continuously echoed by everyone I interacted with that day and it was evident that NatWest had a very positive and welcoming company culture. Everyone was more than happy to answer any questions which as a student, I found really encouraging to see.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed this insight programme. They packed a lot of insightful talks and presentations within just a 2 day programme as well as a group task which I really enjoyed. The opportunity to work on a task, that has a really powerful meaning, with our peers and then present it back to NatWest representatives was very unique to this programme. We also got the chance to network a lot and hear from different business units which was really insightful.

Recommendations and Advice

Would you recommend NatWest Group to a friend?
Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest Group
For the application process, I'd say just be yourself and be personable as this will really shine through when doing things remotely, such as a HireVue. Know the company well and what you are applying for so definitely do some research beforehand. For this programme specifically I think it is best to just remain calm and really just engage as much as possible, ask questions and use every opportunity to learn from your peers and the NatWest Group representatives.
