Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
During the first day we were introduced to the firm through a host of presentations, in which we were able to ask questions at the end. The next couple of days followed this structure, however, in the afternoon we were given free time to work on our pitches for members of the DLA Piper team on the last day of the internship.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was extremely insightful. We were able to understand the composition of the business, the type of work we can expected to complete as trainees and associates, and the possibility for career progression. The business is very caring of its people, as DLA Piper is reliant on their people. I also really enjoyed learning about DLA's networks, ESG and pro bono initiatives.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
Networking is a key skill I have developed, as we were given the freedom to network with all employees within the firm. Another key skill I have developed is pitching, as I had to give a pitch to 4 members from DLA Piper. Through this skill of pitching, my research skills regarding law firms and their practices also was improved, and gave me a greater understanding of the work at DLA Piper.

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company engages employees through their networks such as LAW, Iris, Pact and Mosaic. They really care about their employees feel included and supported. Furthermore, through their one UK approach I could see how they use company wide events to engage all of their employees and create a cohesive and collaborative nature across all the UK offices. Everyone is very collaborative and willing to help the interns/trainees.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed the bespoke insight given to the interns, as we were able to network with trainees, associates and partners. I enjoyed learning about their typical day, and the most stressful/enjoyable parts of their role. I also enjoyed the pitching side of being an intern as I was able to network and meet peers who had applied to work in the same office.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper
Research the firm in detail; know their website insight out. Know the sectors that DLA Piper operate within, and what distinguishes them from other law firms. For assessment centres, just be yourself as they look for authentic people that are honest and frank.
