Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I must write, construct, maintain, and test computer code. The requirements were gathered, and an agile design was created. Following that, the code is written and tested. The programme must be kept up to date in order to be used when the testing is completed. Writing documentation is essential at all levels. As I interact with the team on daily stand-up calls, I may find myself in any of these stages on a regular basis.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given a great degree of power. Along with another intern, I was tasked with completing a project from the teams backlog. This meant that the full software development process had to be followed, from software design to testing. It was a significant load because once the programme is completed, the workers will rely on it to complete daily tasks. Despite the fact that we are the only ones in charge of development, we can call on additional experienced team members as needed.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I learned a lot of new things, such as how to use tools like sprint planning boards and sprint review boards, as well as new software (UiPath) and how to work in an agile environment. I strengthened my communication skills since I had to explain to the team what I had done the day before and what my plans were for the day ahead. In addition, I learnt how to work in a team and how to listen to others opinions constructively.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was given a lot of assistance and guidance. Weekly check-ins allowed me to update my line manager on my progress and discuss any concerns I had. I was able to contact other team members for assistance with the assignment I was assigned if I required it in the meantime. They were more than happy to assist. Furthermore, I was allocated a buddy with whom I met once a week and who served as a resource for guidance and concerns. Finally, the NatWest Group provided interns with weekly drop-in hours during which they may ask any questions they had concerning the internship or other subjects.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The dominant tone was one of support for the workforces well-being. As interns, we were given approximately 4 hours each week for personal development and well-being activities. We have access to a wealth of resources from which we can learn. Weekly presentations on health and general company information were given, such as how the bank is using AI to improve its procedures. Overall, the workplace was peaceful, fostered employee well-being, and was a pleasure to work in.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
It was a pleasure to work for the NatWest Group. Because of it, I was able to learn new skills and improve on those I already have. Furthermore, it provided me with a greater grasp of both the prospective future I may pursue as well as the realities of working as a software engineer on a daily basis. It allowed me to meet new people because networking among interns was actively encouraged through events and a project including interns from all departments, not just those in software engineering.
