Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As a software engineer, I have to create, construct, maintain, and test computer code. Using agile design methods, requirements were obtained and a design created. The code is then written and reviewed. After the testing are over, the programme needs to be kept up to date for future use. Writing documentation is necessary at every level. While communicating with the rest of the team on daily stand-up calls, I might be in any of these stages on a frequent basis.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was granted a good deal of authority. I was given the responsibility of finishing a project that was in the teams backlog, along with another intern. This meant that from software design to testing, the entire software development process had to be followed. It was a big burden because once the software is finished, the staff will rely on it to finish daily duties. Although we are the only ones in charge of the development, we can rely on more experienced team members as needed.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I gained a lot of new knowledge, including how to use tools like sprint planning boards and sprint review boards as well as new software (UiPath) and operate in an agile setting. I have improved my communication abilities because I had to explain to the team what I had accomplished the day before and what my plan was for the present day. In addition, I improved my ability to work in a team and learned how to constructively listen to others opinions.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Throughout the internship, I received a lot of help and direction. Weekly catch-up calls allowed me to talk about my progress and address any queries I had to my line manager. I was able to contact other team members for assistance if I needed it in the interim regarding the assignment I was given. They were more than willing to lend a helping hand. In addition, I had a buddy assigned to me who I met with once a week and who was a resource for advice and inquiries. Finally, the NatWest Group offered weekly drop-in hours where interns may ask any questions they had about the internship or other topics.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The prevailing tone was one that supported the wellbeing of the workforce. As interns, we received about 4 hours per week for personal growth and wellbeing activities. We have access to a large number of resources from which we might learn. Weekly presentations on health and general corporate information, such as how the bank is utilising AI to improve its procedures, were provided. Overall, the workplace was tranquil, promoted employee well-being, and was a pleasant place to work.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
My job with the NatWest Group was a complete pleasure. I was able to pick up new abilities and enhance those I already had thanks to it. Additionally, it gave me a better understanding of both the potential future I could pursue and the realities of working as a software engineer on a day-to-day basis. It made it possible for me to make new friends because networking among interns was actively encouraged through events and a project involving interns from across the organisation, not just those in software engineering.
