Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
There was a wide variety of tasks things we did on the internship. The first week in London having all the interns together from the regional offices was a great feature. The first week involved lots of talks regarding different elements of the firm and then the next two weeks entailed sitting in different departments of the firm. On a day-to-day basis I was involved in drafting, proofreading and note taking - typical trainee tasks.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was great to learn about the firm. At times it could be a little overwhelming as there was a large number of talks and workshops, but we had plenty of time to reflect. It was especially nice to hear about all the pastoral side of the firm, including their people networks and pro bono initiatives. It was also very clear that there is a large number of roles available, not just working as trainees.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I have definitely developed existing skills including confidence and other interpersonal skills through talking to lots of different people at all different levels of the firm. These skills were especially developed as we rotated into different departments so met a huge number of people that you had to adapt to.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
It was very clear from the start that collaboration is at the heart of the firm. Everyone I met was down to earth, but also very driven; motivated without being autocratic or snobby. Equally, everyone I spoke to was very excited about what they do, whether it be business services or the fee earners, they all have a deep interest in their role.

The daily tasks I undertook where both challenging and interesting. It was clear it was related to real-life work and it was explained to me how this would fit into the wide picture and/or transaction; I felt I had real responsibility.
The people were friendly and inclusive and it felt like the genuinely wanted to get to know me, even though I was only there for a couple of weeks.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DLA Piper
Obviously research the practice areas and the work they do, but also focus on the Law& side of things. The firm takes great pride in their pro-bono work and the other aspects of their service delivery.
Also, find ways in which you can show that you are on par with their culture and values.
