Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Half of the day includes job shadowing, which in corporate banking is organised for you involving talks from various employees, learning sessions and demonstrations. In GCM, work shadowing is more ad-hoc and is not structured, it requires you to sit with everybody on the desk you are rotating on. Half of the day includes independent work on an assigned internship project and any work received from other employees.
Weekly there are intern presentations and talks from heads of departments or associate directors and the occasional sit down with the CEOs.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
No, we were only entrusted with one work task that would be helpful to other employees within investment banking. All other tasks were for our own learning.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Support and guidance in the form of a manager who gave the interns a lot of attention as well as mentor which involved weekly meeting updates on your professional and technical progress.
Since the role was mainly job shadowing, guidance was received from almost everybody shadowed.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Depending on the desk in capital markets, the atmosphere is either quite hectic or at a steady fast pace. The atmosphere is generally friendly there although you cannot feel at ease.
In corporate banking, the atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly and you are able to feel at ease.
Overall, the company has a very welcoming and inclusive culture and there was no pressure put upon us.
