Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I work within a small agile team in an existing business unit to create a small project which can add value. For me specifically, I was working with existing code to integrate a new feature, with daily stand ups and learning agile procedures. You get a lot of time for learning, which includes reaching out to people within the companies for chats, and independant learning on the resources provided by amex.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
My team and I worked on a proof of concept for an important feature that was in development. Our work was presented to VPs and senior leadership. As such, I feel like I was given a lot of responsibility. Amex also doesn't babysit your work, there is a lot of independant freedom.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes, I have both developed my existing skills and learnt new ones. There are a wide range of technologies you can work with, and I got to both develop my skills in java, learn springboot, and get to work with javascript react to name just some. I also got the chance to develop my interpersonal skills and presentation skills.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Everyone was always ready to answer questions and provide advice. Pulling the intern card also meant I could meet with people in leadership roles and get to ask them about their experiences and career advice. In this internship, you receive as much support as you ask for - you can work on your own or try and learn from the people around you.
How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Lovely. Everyone was always open to answer questions and support the people around them. It really felt like asking questions was taken as a strength, rather than a sign of being incompetent (like it is at some other companies). Amex really prioritizes your independant growth and learning, and this attitude is reflected in everyone at the company.
