Manufacturing Engineer Review

Manufacturing engineering as part of the continuous process improvement team in Turbine Manufacturing - aiming to improve the yield rate from each process and reducing the number of parts which have to be sent for scrap. This saves time, cost and also better for the environment in terms of operational efficiency. This includes data analysis and liaising with the shop floor to improve understanding of each manufacturing process used in turbine manufacture.

Yes the level of responsibility given was reasonable and based on my capability to take on further work and being proactive. Due to the nature of the aerospace industry everything has to be verified and validated so there wasn't a worry of not having enough responsibility. I had to ensure the work I conducted can be verified/validated and meets the specifications.

I have developed a greater appreciation of manufacturing engineering and understanding how design concepts can be realised through manufacturing and design limits imposed by manufacturing. The quality standard and the very small tolerances used (not detectable by normal vision) is impressive and inconceivable. I developed my communication skills by having conversations with a wide range of product stakeholders from the shop floor (manufacturing technicians) to managers and other colleagues has lead to greater insight in manufacturing

The level of support and guidance has been very good! Although I had to be proactive to receive support and guidance. Everyone I spoke to offered their time to share their experiences and offer guidance as I went along with the work. The level of support during projects has been incredible when I needed it and I would have regular meetings with line managers to discuss my progress throughout the placement ensuring I met my goals.

I enjoyed being part of the company culture and I do feel included in my current department and team. The team I am in are really friendly and sometimes organise work socials which have been good. The general atmosphere at Rolls-Royce is very positive and as a company they seem to be investing heavily in future talent and sustainability initiatives which have made me quite fond of the company and the direction its heading in.

I am really enjoying my internship at Rolls-Royce. My main motivator for this is the purpose of the product. Another factor is I have enjoyed the nature of the work which has involved communication with other team members for the majority of the day mostly on a 1:1 basis. This accelerated my learning as I was learning from others and not reading documents. As an intern, I found being proactive and seeking extra opportunities for work or even networking has made a noticeable difference to my enjoyment on the placement as every day is different!
