What actually happens on A-Level Results Day?
Whether you're quietly confident, a little bit terrified, or somewhere in between, knowing what to expect on A-Level results day will make everything feel a lot easier. It's a huge deal; we’re not going to pretend otherwise. So consider this guide your ultimate walk-through, from someone who was just like you.
When does A-Level results day happen?
A-Level results day 2026 happens on Thursday, 13th August 2026. Most schools and colleges open from 8am for you to collect results in person. You can also check your institution's online portal, if it has one. If you know you won’t be able to collect your results in person, a parent or guardian can collect them for you, but you’ll need to sort this out in advance. It’s so worth going into school or college if you can; having everyone around you when you do open your results makes a huge difference.

Tips on how I prepared
Although we don’t want to manifest the absolute worst happening, I sat my A-Levels during COVID, when everything - and I mean everything - was up in the air. It taught me that having a plan in place, even a rough one, makes the day feel far less overwhelming. Here's the prep that helped me most.
Create a backup plan:
Knowing my options was a huge help and made me realise that if I didn't get the grades, there was still a lot open for me.
Clearing
One of the more popular options, and could become a big part of your results day. More on this below.
Resit your A-Levels
This means you'll be able to sit your exams again without having to be enrolled at a sixth form or college. Lots of students do better on a resit, especially with the pressure of juggling other subjects gone.
Defer and Re-apply
Take a year out and build some real experience. Whether that’s doing some volunteering work, getting a job or even travelling the world; a productive gap year will really add to your personal statement and give you a better idea of what you actually want.
Higher and Degree Apprenticeships
Earn while you study and build industry experience at the same time. The best part is you’ll earn a full degree and walk away with zero student debt. Schemes are available across law, finance, engineering, tech, healthcare, and more. Worth a look if you haven't already.
Find out what support is available:
Your teachers and head of year are still your point of contact, so use all the support you can get if your grades don't go to plan.
Have their names, numbers, and email addresses noted down in advance - even if it’s just for questions before the day itself.
Check UCAS before your grades:
Ultimately, your UCAS result matters more than the grades on paper. It confirms whether you've got into your first-choice university.
Check the UCAS portal (opens at 8am) before you go in to collect your grades; from there you'll know whether to head to student services or straight to celebrating with friends.
Your A-Level grades explained
A-Levels are graded A*, A, B, C, D, E, and U (Ungraded).
Most university offers are based on three A-Level grades, typically AAB or ABB. If you still sat AS Levels, those are graded separately and don't count towards your full A-Level grade.
Studying a BTEC instead of, or alongside, your A-Levels? Your grades will look different.
BTECs use a Pass, Merit, Distinction, and Distinction* system rather than letters. Here's how they translate:

Got the grades you needed?
You did it! Well done.
Once it’s sunk in, keep an eye on your emails from here on out, because your university, employer or training provider will start sending through enrolment info, welcome week details and next steps for accommodation. If you’re heading to uni and haven't sorted somewhere to live yet, check the accommodation portal today rather than leaving it too late.
Then? Go and enjoy it! Make the most of restaurants and chains across the UK that run so many deals every year to celebrate you. We're talking Nando's, Pizza Hut, Café Rouge, and more. All you need to do is have your results slip and student I.D (some places might ask for proof of age, too).
Didn’t get the grades you hoped for? Here's what to do
This can feel like the end of the world. But trust us, it’s really not. You have options. Thousands of students find courses through UCAS Clearing every year, and the process is more straightforward than it sounds.
Here's how Clearing works:
Log into UCAS Track - if your status shows "in Clearing," you're eligible
Search for available courses on UCAS, or ring universities directly
Call the university's Clearing hotline with your UCAS number and results to hand
If they offer you a place verbally, add them as your Clearing choice in UCAS Track
Wait for written confirmation before making any other decisions
My Clearing Tips
Before the day, make sure to have a list of 5-10 universities (with lower grade requirements) you could see yourself attending, along with their clearing number or, even better, the direct number for the specific department you're interested in. Have accommodation options noted down too, and keep your personal statement open in case they need any more details from you, such as why you would want to study the course you’ve selected.

Appealing a grade?
If something's come back lower than you expected, especially if it's very different from the rest of your results, you can ask your exams officer to request a review of marking. The paper gets re-marked by a senior examiner, and the grade can go up, stay the same, or (rarely) go down. Do this asap, as the window for appealing grades closes quickly. There's a fee, but it's refunded if the grade changes.
A-Level results day feels enormous, and it's okay if it does. Give yourself a bit of time before making any big decisions - the morning of is not the moment for permanent choices made in a panic.
Remember, the social media version of results day isn’t the full picture. People share the highlights. Most people's mornings are quieter, messier, and a whole lot more complicated than your FYP suggests. Whatever today looks like, there's a path forward, and the people around you want to help you find it. Don't try to figure it all out alone.
