Laser & Optics Internship - Warrington
STFC’s Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) mission is to build the ‘Big Science’ facilities of the future; we design, build and operate particle accelerators and make major contributions to many of the biggest projects in the world today. Based at Daresbury Laboratory, we work with high-profile national and international partners that include the Cockcroft Institute.
We have a great summer placement available for an undergraduate student to join a multidisciplinary and friendly team supporting the CLARA Accelerator Test Facility.
The placement will be involved in supporting the operation and scientific exploitation of a new commercial ultrafast high power (120 TW) laser system in combined laser-electron beam experiments. You will support the design, procure and install laser transport and laser diagnostic systems for deployment within the CLARA facility, to improve information available to users and drive control schemes for increased stability. You will help the laser team to ensure stable and reliable operation of the laser for external users, collaborating with them on experiment design and helping to improve possibilities for successful research.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
This placement will work with an experienced laser scientist who will provide day-to-day guidance and on-the-job training. You will be introduced to Laser/Optical engineering processes, methods, technology and tools, with particular emphasis placed on learning practical skills that may not be easily gained or experienced in the academic environment of a university. Key duties and core activities include:
- Supporting laser/optical design, including laser beam transport design and optical ray tracing.
- Participating optical design performance modelling, including tolerancing and optical modelling.
- Involving hands-on lab and integration work, laser & optical diagnostics.
- Performing verification testing and problem-solving complex assemblies.
- Helping to conduct the laser diagnostic system optimisation for high performance requirements.
Person Specification
The below criteria will be scored during Shortlisting (S), Interview (I) or both (S&I).
In order to apply for the role, we are looking for the following:
Essential:
- You are in full time education at university, and will be returning to university/your studies to complete your undergraduate degree once the summer placement has concluded (S)
- You have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement (S)
- Currently studying a relevant degree discipline such as Physics, Engineering, or other STEM subject degrees (S)
- The CV and/or cover letter should explain why you have applied for the laser & optics summer placement scheme and should contain examples that involved solving problems and learning, especially in the areas physics and engineering (S)
- Enthusiastic and motivated to learn, both in the workplace and through formal training (I)
- Strong analytical and diagnostic skills, will good communication skills to be able to collaborate and present solutions clearly (S&I)
- Good at keeping things on track and getting tasks done on time (S&I)
- Ability to create slides (PowerPoint, keynote or similar software) to present and evidence progress (S&I)
Desirable:
- Knowledge of basic laser technology and optics (S&I)
- Skill to use computational techniques and/or commercial design software (e.g., MATLAB, CAD software) (S&I)
