We’re searching for Scotland’s next generation of rail apprentices to join us this August and help shape the future of Scotland’s Railway.

With 84.7 million passenger journeys in 2024/25, Scotland’s Railway is essential to transport and the economy. Our team works alongside ScotRail and other operators, to keep the 2,668 miles of track running smoothly for our passengers and freight users.

About the role

As an Engineering Apprentice with Network Rail, you’ll be at the heart of Scotland’s Railway, working on national projects, embracing the latest tech and gaining hands on experience that will take your career full steam ahead. This opportunity is open to people from all walks of life. Whether you’re fresh out of school, switching careers, or looking for a hands-on, rewarding role, we welcome your unique perspective and experiences.

Working alongside experienced engineers at one of our depots, you’ll help maintain our thousands of bridges, signals and hundreds of our level crossings, ensuring Scotland’s Railway keeps moving. The scheme lasts for three years. You’ll kick off year one with our training provider, before moving into a placement at a Network Rail depot for years two and three. Get ready to embrace all weather conditions because we’re out there around the clock, come rain or shine but don’t worry, we’ll provide all the gear you need to stay safe, warm and comfortable.

What you’ll learn

By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll earn your SCQF Level 7 in Engineering – Asset Lifecycle and Maintenance.That’s just the beginning – you could even receive support and sponsorship from us to attend university and achieve professional qualifications.When you start your career with an Engineering Apprenticeship, the possibilities are endless.

What qualifications or qualities are required?

You will be a highly motivated team player with a drive for learning, you’ll slot right in. Bring your passion for engineering, and we’ll help you develop your problem-solving abilities and attention to detail. Flexibility is key, and your commitment to health and safety will keep us all on track.

To apply, you’ll need a minimum of National 5s (or above) in English, a Science, and Maths (excluding Applications of Maths) at Grades A-C, along with one other subject at Grades A-C or equivalent. And don’t forget—you need to be aged 18 or over on or before September 2026 to come onboard the scheme.

It gets better! If you’ve completed a Foundation Apprenticeship or a relevant engineering qualification, you’ll be ahead of the game. We’ll need you to provide evidence of your qualifications and demonstrate the skills you’ve gained through your studies.

Entry Requirement

*Please note: Assessment centres for all vacancies will take place on the 10th and 11th of April 2026 at our head office in Glasgow city centre. Vacancies in Aberdeen and Inverness will be assessed virtually.*
