Job Description

Operation and Maintenance Apprenticeship - Ayrshire, Dumfries & Galloway

Where you’ll be working

The renewables industry is growing fast—and ScottishPower is leading the charge. We’re driving change with major projects across the globe, from planning to construction, and there’s never been a better time to get involved. Our portfolio includes 40 operational wind farms alongside cutting-edge battery storage and solar parks, all working together to create a cleaner, greener future.

We’re moving away from carbon and building a world powered by renewable energy—making electricity cleaner, cheaper, and better for everyone. But we can’t do it alone. We need ambitious, adaptable people who want to make an impact and be part of something big. If you’re ready to learn, grow, and help shape the future of energy, this is your chance.

What you’ll be doing

Our three-year Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Apprenticeship gives you hands-on experience and real-world learning in one of the most exciting sectors – Renewable energy. From day one, you’ll see how your studies connect to live wind farm operations, covering everything from the principles of wind energy and power engineering to electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.

What makes this programme unique?

  • Practical learning on real turbines – Get up close with our onshore wind assets and apply your knowledge to real engineering challenges.
  • Safety first – Learn the fundamentals that keep you and your team safe, including Wind Turbine Safety Rules (Low Voltage) and Electrical & Mechanical Safety Rules (High Voltage).
  • Expert mentoring – Work alongside experienced technicians who will guide you through electrical machine principles, motors and transformers, and power supply systems.
  • Future-ready skills – Gain knowledge in power quality, system faults, and efficiency improvements to support the operation and maintenance of renewable energy sites.

What’s in it for you

By the end of the programme, you’ll have a strong foundation in both traditional and modern engineering methods, ready to step into a career as an operations Technician. Our teams focus on preventative maintenance for Gamesa wind assets, ensuring safe, efficient renewable energy production - and you’ll be part of that mission.

What you’ll bring

  • Two Highers at grades A–C (or equivalent), including Maths and either English or Physics.
  • Comfortable working at heights (turbines can reach up to 90 metres).
  • A full driving licence is essential, as most wind farms are not accessible by public transport.
  • Willingness to travel for offsite academic and onsite training throughout the programme.
