Where you’ll be working

Within SP Energy Networks, we are focusing on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. With distribution networks designed for predictable, stable demand, it’s vital we upgrade our network to create the flexibility required to cope with the extensive changes to electricity demand, generation and consumer behaviour. Through technology and innovation, we will enable a consumer-led revolution in the use and operation of our system. It will undergo the biggest changes to its design and operation for over half a century and you can be part of it.

We know people are central to building a better future, quicker, and we need talented, hardworking, and flexible people to join us.

You’ll find more information about SP Energy Networks, including details of our current projects, on our website.

What you’ll be doing

We’re looking for Cable Jointers, Overhead Linespersons and Electrical Fitters to work across our network.

Details of each trade are listed below:

Cable jointing – As a Cable Jointer Apprentice at SP Energy Networks, you’ll train to install, maintain, and repair underground electrical cables—often working outdoors in all weather conditions—as part of a skilled team ensuring reliable power delivery from substations to homes and businesses. You’ll develop hands-on expertise under the guidance of experienced engineers and mentors, and you'll also be involved in fault diagnosis, safety compliance, record-keeping, and coordinating with colleagues to support a cleaner, greener energy grid supporting the UK’s net-zero goals.

Overhead Linesperson – As an Overhead Lines Apprentice at SP Energy Networks, you’ll be hands-on in building, maintaining, and repairing overhead electricity lines—working at height on wooden poles—to ensure electricity reaches rural homes, farms, and businesses. You’ll be working outdoors in all-weather under the mentorship of experienced operatives, learning to operate safely and efficiently on SP Energy Networks’ extensive overhead network. You will be responsible for installing and repairing overhead lines to maintain power transmission, distribution and to ensure our customers electricity supply is available 24/7. You will be a team player who enjoys working outdoors in a physical role and you will need to be comfortable working at heights, often in a rural environment.

Electrical Fitting – As an Electrical Fitter Apprentice at SP Energy Networks you will be working on equipment within substations over a range of voltages. This work is varied and includes carrying out preventative and reactive maintenance following faults and decommissioning of old equipment and commissioning of new equipment. You will be working on a diverse range of equipment including switchgear, transformers and auxiliary control and protection equipment all of which can vary from old mechanical, analogue equipment to new digital electronic equipment. Working as part of a small team across a range of locations, you’ll ensure that our electricity network meets our high standards by producing quality work, sometimes at heights or in confined spaces.

Blending academic and technical skills tuition with work-based learning, this programme will provide training on a variety of assets, from the latest technology to traditional kit, providing you with a varied and interesting career.

Health and Safety is our number one priority; from day one you’ll be taught the fundamentals enabling you to keep yourself and your colleagues safe. You’ll be introduced to your chosen trade, all within the safety of our first-class training centre in Cumbernauld. During your training, you’ll develop your technical knowledge and hands-on skills. Within your first year, you’ll be out in your local district being mentored by our experienced Craftspeople.
