Engineering Degree Apprenticeship – Central Scotland, Southern Scotland
Programme Overview
Our Graduate Apprenticeship Programme offers a unique opportunity to work across different operational sites and teams, giving you hands-on experience in everything from network planning and asset management to fault response and customer service, whilst studying towards your degree on a part-time basis.
As a Graduate Apprentice in Engineering, you’ll be immersed in a hands-on and academic journey to develop into a fully qualified engineer. You’ll contribute directly to planning, constructing, maintaining, and innovating SPEN’s distribution networks.
What you’ll be doing:

- Assist in the planning, design, installation, and maintenance of substations, overhead lines, and underground cable systems.
- Work alongside engineers and craftspersons on site deployment, network upgrades, and fault resolution.
- Contribute to innovative projects aimed at improving network efficiency, reliability, and decarbonisation efforts.
- Collaborate safely in both office and field environments as part of a supportive, innovative team culture that values continuous improvement
Learning & Development
- Combine on-the-job learning and part-time formal study at university.
- Earn a degree - BEng (Hons) across 4 years.
- Receive mentoring support and structured development aligned with career milestones.
Where you’ll be working
You’ll be based in one of our operational regions across Central and Southern Scotland - with a mix of time spent in the office and out on-site. This blend gives you the chance to see how our network works in the real world, connect with different teams, and gain hands-on experience that goes beyond the desk.
What you'll bring
You'll have four Highers at a minimum of BBBB including Maths and a Science. We can also accept an HNC, HND or Modern Apprenticeship in an Engineering discipline.
What’s in it for you
Our four-year programme brings learning and earning together. Not only will you study towards a nationally recognised qualification, but you’ll also earn a competitive salary, develop new skills and gain invaluable knowledge and experience. Throughout your course, you’ll see how your studies relate to real life network design & operations, building the foundations of your career. With excellent training opportunities, varied career paths and secure employment, this programme will energise your career with us on the journey to the UK Net Zero ambitions.
As an Engineering Graduate Apprentice, you’ll enjoy a range of benefits including:
- Starting salary of £25,950
- A generous pension scheme where the company will contribute double your contribution amount (to a maximum of 10% contribution from the company)
- A broad range of elective benefits including share incentive plans, employee discounts, charity-matched funding and many, many more.
Why SP Energy Networks?
