Job Description

HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship - London

Join our 3-year HGV Technician Apprenticeship and play a vital role in maintaining the London Fire Brigade’s fleet of over 400 vehicles. You’ll be at the heart of the action, helping ensure these life-saving vehicles are always ready to respond.

About the programme

When the sirens sound, London depends on its fire engines being fully operational. As an apprentice, you’ll learn to work safely and proactively to keep these critical vehicles on the road.

You’ll be paired with a dedicated mentor who will support your development as you learn to service and repair HGVs and specialist fire vehicles. From day one, you’ll gain hands-on experience maintaining everything from 32m turntable ladders to cutting-edge electric fire engines.

Working in our Ruislip workshop alongside experienced technicians, you’ll use state-of-the-art tools and equipment to master complex diagnostics, repairs, and servicing. It’s challenging work – but incredibly rewarding, knowing your efforts help protect Londoners every day.

This is an exciting time to join the team. The Brigade is modernising its fleet with renewable fuels, decarbonisation initiatives, and advanced technologies. You’ll be part of a forward-thinking environment that supports cross-skilling and continuous learning.

Your education/training

Most of your time will be spent at London Fire Brigade’s Ruislip workshop, where you’ll carry out all aspects of maintenance and repair on the fleet under the guidance of a senior trained technician. This hands-on experience will be complemented by theory segments delivered through our training partner.

Every six weeks, you’ll attend a one-week block release at Remit Training in Derby. Through this partnership, you’ll work towards achieving an IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry) Level 3 qualification.

By the third year of your apprenticeship, you’ll be ready to undertake your final assessment and qualify as a technician - fully competent in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing the London Fire Brigade fleet.

Future prospects

By the end of your apprenticeship, you'll have the skills and confidence to perform services and repairs on HGVs and specialist fire vehicles.

You may also have the opportunity to undertake higher-level qualifications and expand your skills into other areas such as light goods vehicles and electric vehicles. Additionally, you could develop your expertise in servicing and repairing specialist equipment, such as our 32m and 64m turntable ladders, Command Support Units, and Electric Zero Emissions pumping appliances.

What you’ll need

  • 3 GCSEs at grades 4/C or above (or equivalent) including English, Maths and ICT.
  • Many of our apprenticeship programmes are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which programmes you are eligible for. For this programme, you must be able to achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and Security Check (SC) clearance. Further details are available at United Kingdom Security Vetting: clearance levels – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

What you’ll get

We’ll provide you with a supportive and engaging environment where you can grow your career.

  • Fully funded qualification
  • Personal development training and opportunities
  • Minimum 28 days holiday allowance including bank holidays
  • Competitive pension scheme
  • Employee share scheme
  • Flexible benefits including cycle to work scheme and employee shopping savings portal

You’ll also have the chance to get involved in our STEM outreach activities and volunteering opportunities, which our apprentices find incredibly rewarding.

Your career development

It’s hard to beat the variety of fantastic opportunities and business experiences you’ll receive. You can expect real world encounters and exposure to exciting projects that will really help you navigate where you want to take your career.

Plus, when you join us, you’ll be automatically enrolled onto our Apprentice Development Programme. Through a series of digital and face to face sessions, presented by wellbeing and performance experts and our external partners, we will equip you with the knowledge and tools you need to thrive and perform at your very best on your programme and beyond.
