Software Developers for Cloud-based Linux Engineering Systems Industrial Placement
Are you curious about computing beyond Apps? Do you enjoy coding and want to expand your skills towards configuration of cloud systems for high-performance engineering software? We have an opportunity for a software developer to join our team based in Oxfordshire. As a software developer, you will work alongside a small team committed to developing and maintaining Linux engineering systems in the cloud to support a community of 650 universities.

About the role and a summary of key duties & responsibilities
As a software developer for Linux systems in the cloud, you will have the opportunity to broaden your skill set beyond conventional coding and explore the configuration of advanced cloud-based systems. You will contribute significantly to the creation of tailored solutions for diverse system configurations by emphasizing automated processes and applying DevOps principles.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop configuration management code for automated deployment of Linux virtual machines.
- Customise and configure virtual private clouds, elastic IPs, and mass deployment of multiple machine instances.
- Work closely with CAD software support engineers to identify and address system requirements for successful solution implementation.
- Identify and address system issues to maintain optimal performance and reliability.
- Continuously optimize system performance and stability through proactive monitoring and analysis.
- Stay up to date with the latest industry trends and technologies, ensuring our systems remain at the forefront of innovation.
To apply for this placement, we are looking for the following:
Key - Shortlisting (S), at Interview (I) or both (S&I)
- Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement (S)
- Are required or have requested to take an industrial placement year (S)
- Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement (S)
- Able to commence employment in summer 2026 (S)
- Have a minimum of three A-levels at grade C or above, one of which must be mathematics, or alternative qualifications of an equivalent level (S)
- Good knowledge of Linux computing (S&I)
- Have proven programming ability in procedural-based languages and languages suited to scripting (S&I)
- Have some experience with virtualisation and an understanding of the principles of virtualisation technologies. (S&I)
- Demonstrate a logical approach to software debugging and a genuine interest in discovering more about system architectures and developing Cloud based computing solutions (S&I)
- Conscientious, reliable and hardworking with good interpersonal skills and the ability to identify and communicate relevant technical information in English (S&I)
