Job Description

Materials Engineer Graduate

About the Role

Ready to shape the future of nuclear energy through materials science? At EDF, Success is Personal. Here, you’ll learn from experts, develop key skills, and launch your unique career within a business that’s helping Britain achieve net zero.

“The programme has been a steep learning curve and provided many great challenges and learning opportunities along the way. Whenever I had questions or needed help with my understanding, I have felt comfortable asking any of my more experienced colleagues, who have always been more than happy to spend time helping and coaching me.” – Henry, Engineer

The Opportunity

Alongside earning a salary of £37,500 per annum, you’ll join a 16-month training programme designed to build your technical expertise and professional confidence.

You’ll rotate through placements across central engineering support functions, nuclear new build sites and operational power stations. You’ll work on real-world projects such as component failure investigations, weld assessments and materials performance evaluations. You’ll also receive protected training time for courses covering nuclear fundamentals, EPR systems and safety culture, and be supported to begin your journey towards professional registration with the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining or other relevant bodies.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Materials Engineering Graduate at EDF, you’ll gain hands-on experience, develop technical and professional skills, and contribute to meaningful projects that support the UK’s journey to net zero

  • Perform materials selection, specification and performance assessments
  • Evaluate degradation mechanisms and their impact on design and safety
  • Conduct hands-on component failure investigations in lab facilities
  • Support weld inspection and assessment programmes during outages
  • Collaborate with suppliers to develop qualified weld procedures

Your Work Location

You’ll be based at one of our key sites: Gloucester, Bristol, Bridgwater, Suffolk, Hartlepool or SizewellB. You’ll also have the opportunity for at least one placement away from your main location, gaining exposure to the wider EDF nuclear family. Most locations require 3–5 days in office per week.

Who You Are

To be eligible for this EDF graduate programme, you need to have achieved, or be expecting to achieve, a 2:2 Bachelor’s or Postgraduate degree in Materials Science, Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgy, Welding Engineering or Corrosion Engineering. You’ll have a genuine interest in nuclear energy, strong communication and organisational skills, and a passion for solving technical problems.

Security Vetting

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting, which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least three of the past five years.

Pay, Benefits and Culture

Alongside a starting salary of £37,500 per annum, potential for an annual bonus, and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include customisable benefits such as electric vehicle leasing, discounted gym membership, life assurance, tech vouchers, experience days and more.
