Job Description

Commercial Analyst Industrial Placement

  • Location: Warwick or Wokingham
  • Start Date: June 2026
  • Salary: £24,300

Gain real experience. Make a real impact.

At the National Energy System Operator (NESO), we sit at the heart of Britain’s energy system – making sure the lights stay on today while designing a cleaner, fairer, and more affordable system tomorrow.

The markets NESO runs are currently worth around £3bn a year – and that’s only set to grow by 2030. For market participants, this is a major revenue stream, but our mission is bigger than just the numbers. We’re focused on creating real value for consumers, keeping costs in check while shaping the energy future.

Here’s the big picture: to hit Clean Power 2030 goals, the UK needs around £40bn investment every single year. NESO plays a key role in advising government on designing the markets and policies to make that happen – efficiently, sustainably, and at pace.

Join us for a 12-month industrial placement as a Commercial Analyst and you’ll work on projects that matter — from designing the markets that keep the electricity system running to collaborating with stakeholders across government, industry, and communities.

What you’ll be doing

During your year with us, you’ll work alongside experts in our commercial teams, contributing to the way we operate, plan, and innovate.

You could be:

  • Forecasting Britain’s future energy needs so we can plan networks and markets to meet evolving demand and growing low-carbon energy supply
  • Leading analytical projects to support reliable, affordable, and low-carbon power delivery
  • Negotiating and managing customer connections and service contracts
  • Supporting market design to procure the services needed for electricity system operation
  • Working with industry and national bodies to update the codes that govern energy markets
  • Developing charging rules and managing revenue collection
  • Investigating process improvements and implementing sustainable solutions

What we’re looking for

You’re customer-focused, driven, ambitious, and passionate about tackling climate change. You enjoy problem-solving, working with others, and seeing your ideas make a difference.

You’ll need to be:

  • On track to achieve a minimum 2:2 in any degree discipline
  • Be starting your penultimate year in September 2025

What you’ll get

  • Salary of £24,300
  • 26 days holiday plus UK public holidays
  • Birthday day off – enjoy your birthday as a paid day off!
  • A dedicated buddy to support you throughout your placement
  • Work that directly supports Britain’s net zero targets
  • Exposure to industry experts, mentoring, and networking opportunities
  • The chance to be considered for our Graduate Programme

Why NESO?

We’re an independent public corporation with a mission to:

  • Accelerate the transition to net zero
  • Keep energy reliable and affordable for everyone
  • Drive innovation and collaboration across the industry
  • Protect our environment and landscapes

We’re committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels they belong. We actively encourage applications from all backgrounds and are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments you may need.
