Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I worked developing code for small projects. Day to day this involved attending daily standups to discuss the current state of the project, writing code to complete tickets, responding to code review from teammates, and producing review for teammates.
There was also a 2 week period at the start of the internship used for training in company practices and technical skills.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given some responsibility at my internship, but there were plenty of safety nets as well. I was responsible for the tickets I was working on, and the quality of my code. There were good review processes in place to make sure other people saw my work before it was merged, which was helpful.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes. I've really developed my web development skills, and understanding of agile processes while here. Because I already have some experience in the field there hasn't been a lot of brand new skills (other than specific languages), but my exisiting development and project skills have been developed significantly.
I've also gained a lot of helpful domain knowledge in this position.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received exceptional support and guidance throughout the internship. There were specific people at the company responsible with providing me support, but even outside of them everyone I interacted with was extremely helpful and made sure I got any help I needed.
The training provided was also of very high quality.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture and atmosphere where very positive and collaborative. People were always happy to lend advice, and discuss problems with you when they were brought up. The atmosphere in the office was very relaxed, but still focused on completing goals at the end of the day. Everyone was really kind, and there was a lot of support provided to employees by the company. There was a sense that everyone was working towards a common goal.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed my internship! The training was really engaging, and really effective at getting me up to speed. And the project work I did was interesting and challenging, without making me feel like I was out of my depth.
I enjoyed collaborating with the people at Ghyston immensely, which is what made the experience as good as it was. The fact that it's a smaller company made me feel much more like I was part of it.

What advice would you give to others applying to Ghyston
Don't be afraid to ask questions at any stage of the process, everyone's friendly and they want to help you succeed. Also don't fret too much about the coding challenges, it felt like they were mainly there to assess a base level of competence, and the problem solving / talking parts of the interview were more important. Be prepared to answer questions about yourself, and try to have questions about the company - their website is very helpful for guiding these.
