Field Technician Apprentice

At Virgin Media O2

Level 3 Apprenticeship

We spoke to Amy, a Field Technician Apprentice here at Virgin Media O2. She told us a little bit about what it’s like being a female Field Tech, what interested her about the role and her day-to-day responsibilities. Here’s what she had to say...

What does a typical day in your life look like within the Field Tech Apprenticeship role?

For the most part, a typical day starts at 8am and spending the rest of the day either installing broadband and/or TV or fixing problems that's have occurred with a customer's broadband or TV. On paper, it sounds the same and boring, but you literally have no idea what you could be walking in to. It could be an enormous house that takes hours to run cables, or it could be as simple as just plugging in new equipment. But that isn't every day either. It's nice to see your colleagues when you visit your store to collect equipment and there are often opportunities to do something completely different.

The basis of the job is the same every day but there is enough variation to keep it interesting.

Why did you choose Virgin Media O2? What attracted you to join our scheme over another role?

What attracted me to this role was the learning on the job. There are not very many apprenticeships anymore that allow you to work, earn and learn at the same time. I needed no previous experience to apply, just a willingness to learn new skills. I had always been a fan of Virgin broadband and the fact that it such a massive company almost guarantees job security. Richard Branson has also been quoted saying “train your staff so that they can leave, but treat them so they don't,” and I find that statement rings true.

What is it like being a female field tech apprentice? Do you have any top tips for females thinking about applying for this role?

It is noticeable that you are in a predominantly male industry, but as the apprenticeship teaches you everything, you have no need to worry. The only thing I would say is that you need to be secure in yourself to have to deal with ‘boy banter’! Everyone I have met whilst working here have been nothing but helpful, friendly and supportive and I was even sent on a self-defence course as 90% of the time you will be lone working.

What do you like about your job? Where would you like to progress in the future?

I like how physical it is. It's just like giant Meccano from when I was a child. Once you know how to do it, you know how to do it; and when there are updates or new products, we are all trained on how to do it. There are so many opportunities to progress within the company that I still don't know what they all are! At the moment, I am quite comfortable staying in the tech role.

What was the application process like?

I admit the application was long, but it was easy enough. Mostly, they are looking for the right type of people as the job can be taught with no problem. It was so long ago now that I can't quite remember so it couldn't have been that horrible!

Are there any myths you want to bust about your scheme/role?

I cannot think of any myths I have heard about the role. Only that you really do not need previous experience. Just apply, you have nothing to lose!
