Level 4 Construction Site Supervisor Apprentice

At Thames Water

Higher Level Apprenticeship

I am Zac an Apprentice Project Engineer based out of Bishop’s Stortford, currently completing my first year of my Level 4 Construction Site Supervisor Apprenticeship.

I am currently working towards finishing the first two modules for my Apprenticeship, alongside working on several different projects with the supervision of my mentor at Rye Meads.

Why did you choose to apply for a Thames Water apprenticeship?

One of the main reasons why I chose to apply for a Thames Water apprenticeship was because of the values that were displayed both on the website and by the Thames Water hiring team throughout the apprenticeship process, from the first interview to the last, they were all very friendly and showed the true values of Thames Water. Just by being that extra bit friendly and engaging gave me personally an extra boost of confidence and made me feel a lot better about the situation and to calm down and answer the questions without a worry.

Can you tell me about your life and career journey?

In my career journey I always knew that I wanted to do an apprenticeship. I wasn’t sure what industry I wanted to be in by doing Maths A- Level and BTEC Sport. But during my revision at Sixth Form I was also applying for different apprenticeships. This was when I applied to my Thames Water Apprenticeship and like I said previously when I had my first interview, I was smiling the whole time because of how friendly the interviewer was and made me feel comfortable.

In my life journey I feel like starting my apprenticeship really made me understand the changes between school and work. The main factor was the level of responsibility increased by a lot and the relationships you build with different people around the business.

Tell me about your typical working day as a Thames Water Apprentice (positives and challenges)

My typical working day as a Thames Water Apprentice would be an eventful day. First thing that would happen is seeing everybody in the office and to then see what we have in store that day with contractors on site for different projects that I may look at even if they may not be my job specifically. As well as looking for the schedule that day I may even have paperwork to either review and send back to the contractors or to do for myself to update where I am at with everything. The positives on a day to day as an apprentice at Rye Meads specifically would be how friendly everyone is and you can speak to anyone there and they will help you if possible or point you in the correct direction of someone that can help. When being on site with the contractor it is interesting to see the different way people think about getting to different solutions for a problem and which one will end up being most efficient.
