Finance Placement

At Softcat

Placement (10 Months+)

Finance

The Finance Intern role is a rotational placement that takes you around the department and Business Operations throughout your year. I started my journey in Credit & Commercial Risk, and worked my way around Tax, Treasury, Cloud Billing, Account Collections, Account Payable, Leasing, Order Fulfilment and Financial Reporting.

With the majority of my time being spent in Credit & Commercial Risk and Cloud Billing, my day to day was rich with collaboration and cross-team communication. The two teams are along a similar line within the business functions, with CR focusing on analysing financial accounts for a business in order to decide on risk management surrounding their credit limit, and CB dialling in on the cloud solutions/products we provide our customers (Azure, AWS, Adobe etc) and getting them billed smoothly.

Everyone I was working with was super helpful, offering me support with all the questions I had, no matter what they had ongoing within their own day as well. This is consistent around the entire business, with colleagues constantly upholding all the values that you would expect from Softcat. Managers/Team Leaders are also super helpful and are dedicated to building and evolving your skillset from the ground up to assist you in both your role and with future employment as well.

Softcat makes an effort to have the intern cohort get involved with quarterly projects from a charity day in the local community, to building and running a Buddy Scheme for the following cohort of interns to take over. These hold many highlights of the year and take into consideration all the Softcat values along the way.

By the end of my dedicated placement year, I gained strong commercial acumen, a solid understanding of revenue sources, business functions, report writing and soft skills beneficial for my final year at university/future employment. Working on projects surrounding automation and efficiency in different teams has also allowed me to sharpen my skills in process improvement, something that I can carry on with my career. I was lucky enough to be able to stay on past my placement year for an additional 3 months at Softcat, gaining even more of the above before having to return back to university.

I advise all following interns to make the most of the opportunity and move around the business as much as possible, shadowing teams that work alongside you and even those that don't! The experience and knowledge available to you is invaluable.
