Turning Curiosity Into a Career in Tech
Alex’s journey into tech wasn’t linear. After studying Politics and Economics at university, he found himself in tech recruitment, but none of it felt like the long‑term direction he wanted. What he did know was that he loved learning and wanted to build a practical, future‑proof skillset. Teaching himself bits of IT sparked something deeper, and an apprenticeship seemed like the perfect way to combine structured learning with real experience.
A friend already working in Tech Hub encouraged him to apply to Fidelity, and a tour of the Kingswood office confirmed it instantly: this felt like the right place to grow.
Learning the Ropes, One Issue at a Time
My first few weeks were spent shadowing, watching, listening and getting used to the rhythm of Tech Hub. Once I felt ready, I started taking on simple technical issues like fixing keyboards and mice. With every repeated issue, my confidence grew, and soon I was diagnosing more complex problems. What surprised me most was how quickly I began to feel part of the team and how fast my technical skills improved.
Thriving in a Social, Supportive Environment
One of my favourite parts of the role is how social it is. I speak to people from every area of the business, often without knowing how senior they are, and everyone treats me with the same friendliness and respect. The culture is far less corporate than I expected and incredibly collaborative. Because of that, I’ve become more confident, more comfortable asking questions and more willing to step outside my comfort zone.
Balancing Work and Study With Strong Support
Mondays and Tuesdays are usually the busiest, with deliveries, stock tasks and lots of face‑to‑face stakeholder support. Quieter moments are perfect for admin or strengthening my technical knowledge. I also have dedicated study days that help me apply what I’m learning in my qualification to real scenarios. My mentor from the training provider and my buddy inside Fidelity have been invaluable, there’s always someone I can turn to.
Foundations I Didn’t Realise I Had
Looking back, I can see how much my school developed skills like listening well, speaking clearly and helping people feel comfortable. These skills have shaped the way I support colleagues today. Those soft skills are just as important as the technical ones.
My Advice for Future Apprentices
My advice is simple: learn the basics and show genuine interest. You don’t need deep technical knowledge on day one, but curiosity and enthusiasm will set you apart.
