At BDO

School Leaver Programme

Emma Scott, a Trainee in Audit at BDO, shares her journey through the apprenticeship programme, highlighting the support and development opportunities that have shaped her experience. Her story offers a glimpse into the dynamic environment at BDO, where learning and growth are at the forefront.

What can you expect from an apprenticeship at BDO in terms of learning and development?

Starting my apprenticeship at BDO has been a game-changer. The support from colleagues at all levels has really boosted my soft skills. Training days and retreats are not just educational—they're fun too, offering a chance to network with people across the country.

Can you describe a typical day in the life of an apprentice at BDO?

A typical day for me starts with arriving at the office a bit before nine to settle in. I check emails for any urgent tasks or updates, grab a coffee, and then coordinate with my manager and fellow audit trainees to prioritise tasks. Lunchtime is often spent with other trainees, adding a social touch to the workday.

How do you balance studying with your work responsibilities during your apprenticeship?

Balancing study with work is manageable thanks to a dedicated study day each week. This allows me to consolidate knowledge and learn new content. My hour-long commute is also a valuable time for studying, especially during exam periods.

What has been the biggest change for you moving from school to working at BDO?

The transition from school to work has been challenging due to longer days and a more demanding schedule. My routine has shifted from school hours to starting at 6:30 and finishing at 7, but the structured support at BDO, including a buddy system, has been invaluable.

What skills have you found most valuable in your day-to-day work at BDO?

Social and networking skills have been particularly beneficial, boosting my confidence in client interactions. Basic IT skills have naturally improved through daily use, making me more efficient. I advise anyone considering an apprenticeship at BDO to go for it. The blend of work and study is perfect, and the culture and people make it a unique experience.

How do you find the transition from classroom learning to practical work experience?

The transition from classroom learning to practical work was somewhat challenging, but previous work experience helped me apply classroom knowledge effectively. Learning BDO's systems and audit processes was initially daunting, but the eagerness of colleagues to help made it manageable.

What tips do you have for managing your time effectively between work and study commitments?

Managing time effectively between work and study involves creating a study timetable and being strict with myself to avoid procrastination. Music without lyrics helps me focus, and I strive to complete work tasks during the day to preserve study time.

Emma Scott's apprenticeship at BDO exemplifies the organisation's commitment to providing a platform for growth and development. Her experience showcases the benefits of working in a dynamic and supportive environment, where she can pursue her passion and build a successful career in Audit. Emma's story is a powerful reminder of the value of combining practical experience with structured learning, supported by a community that encourages success.
