How to use our reviews to find a job

You'd check the reviews before buying something online; why not do the same for your first job?

Whether you’re brand new to Higherin or just haven't used our job reviews yet, you’re in the right place. They’re written by our student community who've been exactly where you are, sharing an unfiltered look at what their work experience was like. Here’s how to use them to help find the perfect role for you.

Start with what you’re looking for

Our job reviews are split into different types of work experience, so whether you’re at school or in your second year of university, you’ll be able to find reviews for apprenticeships, placements, internships, graduate schemes and more. You’ll find those options under ‘Job Type’ on the left-hand side.

Each type of work experience covers slightly different things within the review (we’ll get into that a little later). You’ll find sections covering everything from training providers to skills development and even the fun bits like company culture.

Use filters to cut through the noise

We have over 60,000 reviews, and we don’t want you to sift through all of them to find what you’re looking for. Our filters make it so much easier. These are split into:

LOCATION

Where do you want to work? This could be where you’re based, or if you want to find an opportunity in a new city. You can also use your location to see what’s nearby (you’ll need to allow your browser to use this function).

JOB TYPE

Whether you’re looking for an apprenticeship, school leaver programme, placement, internship, grad role, insight or vacation scheme, you’ll find them here. Some types will give you further options (you’ll find different apprentice levels, and graduates can be split by jobs and schemes).

JOB ROLES

You’ll find reviews in 19 industries. Looking for a review about graphic design? We’ve got it. Want to know what it’s like to be in the armed forces? We’ve got it, too. When you pick an industry, you’ll get further options if you’re looking for something specific (for example, if you’re interested in project management).

At the top, you’ll find the search bar. If you’re looking for any particular companies or job roles that might not be listed as an option, you can use the search bar to find a review.

What to look for in a review

Our reviews are packed with insights, and you don’t necessarily have to read every single word. On the right-hand side, you’ll find the ‘In This Review’ section, where you can skip to different parts. Here’s what to focus on depending on what you’re looking for.

“What will I actually be doing?”

Go straight to the overview section. You’ll find out what your day-to-day could look like, the various tasks you’d be expected to do and their overall experience.

Here’s what one graduate project manager felt about their time at Mott MacDonald:

My experience in Mott Macdonald has been phenomenal. It has been an amazing learning experience around Project Management, which is what I specialise in and I have enjoyed how interesting it is to be a part of a project. The work culture is also amazing… Graduate Project Manager, Mott MacDonald

“Will I learn anything?”

Work experience is all about skills, so in the skills development section, we ask our student community what they’ve actually learned during their time at the company.

“Will I get any support?”

For a lot of you, this would be your first time working. The support and guidance section answers questions about what the manager and team were like.

“Will I enjoy being there?”

Head straight to the company culture section. You’ll learn about how inclusive and charitable workplaces are and what the fun social bits are like.

“Is it worth it?”

You’ll find this in the overall experience section and in recommendations. We ask our student community how much they enjoyed their work experience and if they’d recommend it to a friend.

“Does it lead anywhere?”

We ask our placement and internship students what the career prospects are like and if they’ve been offered a graduate role. Great if you’re unsure about what happens after you’ve finished work experience.

“What do I need to know before I apply?”

In the recommendations and advice section, students give their top tips for the application process. We’ll cover more of this later on.

Not every review type covers every section. Apprenticeship reviews dive into training provider support, and insight day reviews focus on networking opportunities and access to future roles.

Deep dive into the companies you’re interested in

Know who you want to work for? Check out our company profiles. You can find these by either using the search section on the left or clicking on companies in the navigation bar at the top.

The company profiles are filled with so much. You’ll find their profile, which includes an about section and some videos. You’ll also find their jobs, reviews and case studies all in one place.

TOP TIP: You can save the companies, reviews and jobs you’re interested in on the right-hand side. Make sure you’re logged in.

Let reviews shape your application

Our reviews include real advice from students who've been through the application process at that specific company. Think of it as insider info you can’t get anywhere else.

In the recommendations and advice section, you’ll find advice from students about the recruitment process, whether the scheme meets expectations and if you’d recommend the scheme to a friend.

Here’s some application advice from a health and safety degree apprentice at AstraZeneca:

Prepare properly for the assessment day. Practise common formats (strengths/behaviour questions, group tasks, written exercises) and be ready to explain your thinking clearly and calmly using the STAR approach… Level 7 Health and Safety Apprentice, AstraZeneca
