Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I researched trade statistics between the UK and potential/current trading partners. This included looking at trade flows, barriers to trade and identifying what are areas which could be liberalised. Most of the time I would input this information into documents and present on it.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Sometimes. It was really dependant on whether or not my manager was on holiday. However, it is very much up to you to take on responsibility and communicate with your manager on how you wish to develop. I led on many different projects without managerial input and was able to steer it in my own direction. Additionally, if you needed help I was always told to reach out and I wasn't afraid to do so.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I learnt a lot. Specifically how to organise my time, present confidently and use economic models. I also learnt a lot about trade theory which was great for my dissertation and final year of university. The GES is a great way to learn, and there are plenty of training opportunities to take up if you so wish.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
A lot. I had multiple meetings with my manager and we spoke about development and where I wanted to be. But it is very much up to you to guide the conversation and ask the correct questions. It is a great way to develop in the way you want to by identifying your weaknesses and taking on constructive feedback.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
It was super friendly and relaxed. I met some great people inside and outside my direct team who I keep in contact with as they were so nice! This is dependant on the department however and it varies. The one problem I had however is there was not a lot of push to get work done, and people could be complacent (including myself)!

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed it very much, I met some great people and learnt a lot. I do wish however that I was pushed a bit more. A lot of the time you really have to motivate yourself to get things done as management tends to let you do your own thing. For some thats great but for me it never suited me, but perhaps that says more about my own skills and work ethic.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Government Economic Service to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Government Economic Service
Enjoy it and take up the learning opportunities. Because of the relaxed nature of the service, it is easy to become a bit complacent, so try to keep up your motivation. Do not be afraid to make mistakes, you will learn and people will never look down upon you for it, and will give you constructive feedback on how to improve. So always be honest!
