Shown the mapping and planning for new woodland creation as well as being shown the varies grant schemes available to their clients. Attend a site of new woodland creation and assist in marking out areas requiring planting.

It was been a real eye opener as to the variation of potential jobs in forestry, before coming to the insight programme I thought with forestry that it was quite clear cut as to going into commercial or conservation but I have seen here that it is likely that you can do both even when working for a commercially driven company.

Lots of specific knowledge on tree species choices and general first hand information about establishment techniques used. We have looked at mapping for new woodlands at university but it was really useful to see how this is done by professionals and to see what the thought process behind highlighting certain features with regards to mapping and planning.

It has been a really enjoyable experience, the forestry team is small (2 people) however they operate from a larger rural office and everybody has been extremely welcoming and happy to help, it was been interesting hearing the other teams work and the cross over between teams. Both members of the forestry team have instantly made me feel welcome and taken time out of their busy weeks to ensure they are engaging with me.

I have found the entire week extremely enjoyable there has been a good balance of office based work and site visits of which I found particularly enjoyable, seeing a site of new woodland creation with several different contractors carrying out their various jobs was great. And it has also been enjoyable communicating and being welcomed by the members of the team.
