Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I work as an IT & AV Support Technician within the university's Campus IT team. My day-to-day work involves providing technical support to staff and students, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, setting up and maintaining computers, and helping with audiovisual equipment across campus. I work with both Windows and Mac devices, as well as systems such as Active Directory, Microsoft Intune and Azure. Every day is a little different, as the issues can range from simple user requests to more complicated technical problems. I also spend a lot of time interacting with people, understanding their issues and finding practical solutions.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I have been given a good amount of responsibility throughout my internship. From quite early on, I was trusted to investigate and resolve IT support issues independently, while still having colleagues available whenever I needed guidance. I've been able to work on a range of different tasks, including troubleshooting devices, configuring computers and dealing directly with staff and students. I feel that being given this level of responsibility has helped me become more confident in my technical abilities and in making decisions on my own.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, definitely. Although I already had a background in Computer Science and IT, this internship has given me the opportunity to apply my knowledge in a real working environment and develop skills that I hadn't had much practical experience with before. I've become much more familiar with tools such as Microsoft Intune, Active Directory and Azure, as well as troubleshooting both Windows and macOS devices. I've also gained experience dealing with a wide variety of hardware and AV equipment. One of the biggest improvements has been my confidence in diagnosing problems independently. I've also developed my communication skills through working directly with staff and students, particularly when explaining technical issues to people who might not have an IT background.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I've received a good amount of support throughout my internship, both from my line manager and the rest of the Campus IT team. Everyone has been approachable and willing to help whenever I've come across something unfamiliar or needed a second opinion. What I've particularly appreciated is being given the freedom to work independently while knowing that support is always available if I need it. My colleagues have been happy to share their knowledge and explain how different systems and processes work, which has helped me learn a lot through practical experience. Overall, I've felt welcomed and supported as part of the team rather than just being treated as an intern.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The atmosphere within the Campus IT team has been really positive. Everyone has been friendly and approachable, and I've felt welcomed from the beginning of my internship. There's a good balance between working independently and helping each other out, and people are always happy to share their knowledge or offer advice when needed. Even when things get busy, the team works well together and there's generally a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. One thing I've particularly appreciated is that I've been treated as a proper member of the team rather than just an intern. It's made the experience much more enjoyable and has helped me settle into the working environment quite quickly.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I've really enjoyed my time working with the Campus IT team. It's been a great opportunity to gain practical experience in a professional IT environment, especially after completing my studies. What I've enjoyed most is the variety of work and the people I've worked with. There's always something different to deal with, and I've been able to learn a lot by working on real technical issues rather than just studying them in theory. The team has made the experience particularly enjoyable. I've felt included from the beginning, and being trusted to take responsibility for my own tasks has made the work more rewarding. Overall, it's been a very positive experience that has helped me grow both professionally and personally. It's also given me a better understanding of what working in IT is like and what I'd like to do next in my career.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Manchester Metropolitan University to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Manchester Metropolitan University

I'd definitely recommend applying, especially if you're looking to gain practical experience and develop your skills in a supportive working environment. My main advice would be to show a genuine interest in the role and a willingness to learn. You don't need to know everything before starting, but being curious, asking questions and taking the initiative makes a big difference. I'd also encourage anyone joining to make the most of the people around them. I've learnt a lot from my colleagues, and being open to trying new things has helped me become much more confident in my abilities. Overall, I'd say don't be afraid to apply even if you don't meet every single requirement. Having the right attitude and being willing to learn can be just as important as your existing technical knowledge.
