Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As a Graduate Communications Assistant within the Library & Cultural Services team, supporting the Communications and Engagement team. My role involves creating and delivering content to promote library services, resources, events and student opportunities across social media and other communication channels. On a day-to-day basis, I help plan and create Instagram content, write captions and storyboards, develop campaign ideas, research social media trends and review engagement analytics to understand what content performs well. I also contribute to internal staff communications, support promotional campaigns and work with colleagues across Library & Cultural Services to highlight the services and resources available to students and staff.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was given a good level of responsibility throughout my placement and was trusted to take ownership of various communications tasks and projects. This included independently researching and developing social media content, writing captions, creating storyboards and suggesting new campaign ideas. I was also given the opportunity to contribute to the staff newsletter, review social media performance and make recommendations for improving engagement. I was encouraged to use my own initiative and creativity while having support and guidance from the wider team when needed.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, I have developed a range of existing skills and gained new ones throughout my placement. In particular, I have improved my content creation, copywriting and social media management skills, as well as gaining more experience analysing engagement data and using insights to inform content decisions. I have also developed my understanding of internal communications, campaign planning and adapting content for different audiences and platforms. Additionally, my confidence, communication, organisation and ability to work independently have all improved.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a good level of support and guidance throughout my placement. The team were approachable and always willing to offer advice, answer questions and provide feedback on my work. I was given the independence to take ownership of tasks and develop my own ideas, while knowing that support was available whenever I needed it. Regular conversations with colleagues also helped me understand the wider objectives of the team and how my work contributed to them.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture was very welcoming, friendly and supportive. The team created a positive working environment where everyone was approachable, collaborative and happy to share their knowledge and experience. I felt comfortable asking questions, contributing ideas and getting involved in different projects. There was also a good balance between working independently and collaborating with colleagues, which made it an enjoyable environment to learn and develop professionally.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and found it to be a really valuable experience. It gave me the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills I developed during my degree in a real working environment, while gaining practical experience in communications, social media and marketing. I particularly enjoyed the creative aspects of the role, having the freedom to contribute my own ideas and seeing some of my work being used across the University's platforms. The welcoming team and supportive working environment also made the experience even more enjoyable.
