Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Day to day role included checking emails and responding to emails on a daily basis. Personal responsibilities included updating project Excel documents with the latest information, networking with other people within the company, and occasionally attending site visits. Attending seminars and industrial events was also a requirement, this was to keep up to date and report back on the latest trends and developments happening within the power sector.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Even though my internship was only 8 weeks, I believe the responsibilities I was given during my time were acceptable and manageable. The workload was evenly balanced and not too challenging. When encountering challenging problems there was always sufficient support from the team I was in and helpful resources that were available at National Grid.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a healthy amount of support. A lot of support was given helping to develop my soft skills and hard skills. The biggest support that was available was being able to ask senior members of the company how to develop our careers within engineering. This was really helpful and insightful.
Plus everyone I met in the company was extremely friendly and supportive.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Very Chill.
There is no constant pressure to deliver on work at specific deadlines and to be in the office at all times. They really trust you to do the work and know that you will deliver. This is very helpful as you actually can get the work done and deliver it to a high quality.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Being able to work remotely helped significantly. I did not feel pressured in any way to do something I didn't like. Being able to speak to anyone at the company was a big bonus. Just simply dropping an email and getting to know who they are and what they do really helped to reinforce how relaxed the company is and that they really do, and they trust you that you will get the job done.
