Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

During my City placement, I completed a dissertation which involved using software such as SPSS to analyse data, identify trends and patterns, and present my findings in a written report. Although this experience was more research and data-focused, it helped me develop strong analytical, organisational and report-writing skills.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

During my City placement, I was given responsibility for completing my dissertation and ensuring that I submitted it by the required deadline. A key part of my responsibility was managing my own time effectively, as I had to plan the different stages of the research, analyse the data, and make sure the final report was completed and submitted on time.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I developed my organisation and time management skills. I was responsible for completing my dissertation and submitting it by the required deadline, so I had to plan my workload, manage different stages of the research and make sure I stayed on track. This helped me become more independent and responsible for completing tasks without needing constant supervision. Another skill I developed was my written communication. I had to present my research findings in a clear and meaningful way.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

My placement involved mostly independent work, as I was responsible for managing my own research, analysing the data and completing my dissertation. This allowed me to become more confident in working independently and taking responsibility for my own tasks and deadlines. Support and guidance were always available throughout the placement whenever I needed it. If I was unsure about something or came across a problem, I was able to ask for help and was provided with the appropriate resources, advice and guidance to help me understand what I needed to do.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

What was beautiful about City in the Community was how organised and welcoming everyone was. It was definitely an experience I won't forget. What stood out to me most was seeing, first-hand, the initiatives they have in place for children, how they used sports as a way of supporting, nurturing and development.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I really enjoyed my placement overall. One of the things I enjoyed most was being involved in the different programmes and filming shoots that we worked on. It was really interesting to see how everything worked behind the scenes and to experience the process first-hand rather than just learning about it.

What advice would you give to others applying to Manchester Metropolitan University

My advice to anyone applying to Manchester Metropolitan University would be to make the most of the opportunities available to you. Manchester has so many different opportunities to explore, whether that's through your course, placements, societies or experiences outside of university.
I would encourage students to be open to trying new things and getting involved, even if it's something they haven't done before. There are lots of opportunities to build on your skills, develop your confidence and gain experience, which can open doors to future opportunities.
