Construction Management Summer Placement Review

As a Trainee Construction Manager working on the construction of the Dunard Centre in Edinburgh, my role involves supporting the delivery of a complex city-centre construction project while continuing my university studies for my honours year. My time is split between the site and the office, which has given me exposure to a wide range of construction management activities.
On a daily basis at work, I assist with site coordination, review construction documentation and method statements, monitor ongoing works, attend meetings, regularly update records and help ensure works are being carried out safely and in line with programme requirements. I have also had the opportunity to work with different members of the project team and gain an understanding of how the various disciplines involved in a major construction project come together. Being part of such a technically challenging project has allowed me to see first-hand how construction management is applied in practice, which has complemented my studies extremely well.

Yes. From an early stage of my placement, I was trusted to get involved in real project activities instead of simply observing/shadowing work. As my confidence and understanding developed, I was given increasing levels of responsibility and became involved in essential tasks that contributed directly to the day-to-day running of the project.
One thing that stood out to me was the level of trust placed in placement students. Instead of being treated solely as a placement student, I was trusted to become a genuine member of the project team. Throughout the placement, I was encouraged to contribute to real project activities, gain valuable exposure to different aspects of construction management and work alongside experienced professionals. I also had the opportunity to represent the project through interviews and external communications. The trust placed in me, combined with the support provided by the team, was a major factor in my decision to continue working with Balfour Beatty part-time throughout my honours year at university.
The responsibility I was given made the placement far more rewarding and played a big part in my decision to continue working with Balfour Beatty throughout my honours year. The support from the team, combined with the opportunities I was given to develop both technically and professionally, made it an excellent environment to learn and grow. More than anything, I genuinely enjoyed being part of the project. Having the opportunity to contribute to a landmark development such as the Dunard Centre, Edinburgh's first purpose-built concert hall in over a century, was something I never expected when applying for a summer placement with Balfour Beatty. Combined with the variety of work and complexity of the project, it meant I was constantly learning and often found myself talking to friends and family about my work long after the working day had finished.

Yes. University has given me a strong understanding of the theory behind construction management, but there are many aspects of the role that are difficult to fully appreciate until you experience them on a live project. Things such as site coordination, construction logistics, stakeholder management, planning and dealing with day-to-day challenges become much easier to understand when you can see them happening in practice.
Working on the Dunard Centre has allowed me to bridge that gap between theory and reality. Many experienced members of the project team have spoken about how complex this project is, and how it exposes those working on it to challenges that are not encountered on every project. I've often been told that the experience gained from working on a project of this nature will be 'invaluable' throughout my career, as it provides exposure to a wide range of extremely technical and logistical challenges from an early stage. Being involved in activities such as reviewing construction documentation and method statements, attending meetings, monitoring works and supporting daily site operations has given me a much better understanding of how a major construction project is actually delivered.
What has made the experience particularly valuable is the approach taken by Balfour Beatty. Rather than being limited to observing/shadowing those with many years of experience, I was encouraged to get involved, ask questions and learn from these experienced members of the team. The variety of work and the level of responsibility I was given, having me actually contribute to the project, allowed me to develop both technically and professionally, and I feel far better prepared for a career in construction management as a result. On a side note, it has also left me feeling more prepared for beginning my honours year than I have ever felt going into previous years of my course.

The level of support and guidance I received throughout my placement was excellent. One of the things that stood out most was the balance between being supported and being trusted to work independently. I was given plenty of opportunities to take ownership of tasks and learn through practical experience, without someone constantly looking over my shoulder.
At the same time, whenever I needed help or wanted to understand something in more detail, experienced members of the team were always willing to take the time to explain it properly. Rather than simply giving me an answer, they would help me understand the reasoning behind it, which made the learning experience much more valuable. This combination of trust, support and willingness to share knowledge created an environment where I was able to develop both personally and professionally throughout the placement.

The culture throughout my placement was extremely positive. Despite working on a highly complex and demanding project, everyone was approachable, supportive and willing to help. What stood out most was the willingness of experienced team members to share their knowledge and invest time in developing others. There was a genuine sense of teamwork across the project, and I was made to feel part of the team from an early stage. It was also encouraging to see people from a wide range of backgrounds and experience levels across the team, including women in both experienced and early career roles, helping to challenge some of the stereotypes often associated with the construction industry.
The overall working environment also played a part in creating such a positive atmosphere. Being based in dedicated office space at the RBS headquarters provided excellent facilities and collaborative working spaces that are not necessarily associated with a typical construction site. Combined with the professionalism and support of the project team, it created an environment that was both enjoyable to work in and highly conducive to learning.
Another thing I appreciated was the effort made to create a positive working environment. Alongside the day to day work, there were regular wellbeing and mental health activities, as well as team-building events that helped bring people together. It was clear that looking after people and maintaining a strong team culture were genuine priorities on the project, which contributed to a positive atmosphere throughout my placement.

My summer placement at the Dunard Centre in Edinburgh has been an incredible experience. It has been great to see the theory from my university studies put into practice on such a significant and technically challenging project, while learning from the experienced professionals around me. I have gained valuable insight into the construction industry, and the thought of looking at the building in years to come knowing that I played a small part in delivering Edinburgh's first purpose-built concert hall in over 100 years has only strengthened my passion for pursuing a career in construction management.
